Travel tips for responsible tourists

When you travel to southern Africa, please keep the following things in mind:

Be respectful of local citizens' privacy, ask permission before entering sacred places, homes or private land.
Buy souvenirs locally and shop wisely. Don't engage in overly aggressive bargaining. Don't short-change on tips for services.
Learn a few words of the local language and use them.
Stay longer at destinations to minimize environmental and maximise economical impact
Ask your hotel about environmental policies, practices and working conditions and supporting of community projects.
Support conservation by paying entrance fees to parks and protected sites.
Respect the natural environment. Never touch or harass animals. Follow designated trails.
Never purchase crafts, clothing, furniture or other products that are derived from protected or endangered animal species.
Hire local licensed guides for tours. Enrich your experience and support the local economy.
Read up on local conventions and dress appropriately. In most areas modest dress is important.
