DAY-TO-DAY Day 1: Clanwilliam Day 2: Donkey Cart Trail Day 3: Heuningvlei Day 4: Cederberg Day 5: Wupperthal Day 6: Return
ITINERARY Day 1: Cape Town - Clanwilliam On the first morning of your stay, you drive to the old colonial style town of Clanwilliam known for its rooibos and hand-made “veldskoene” (excellent hiking shoes). Arrive late afternoon. Overnight Clanwilliam. Dinner and breakfast included.
Day 2: Clanwilliam After breakfast you will be collected and taken to a three hour guided hike. The trail will take you to ancient rock paintings created by the San people, the original inhabitants of this area. After a rewarding picnic lunch, you will be transferred to the top of the spectacular Pakhuis Pass. From there you will take the Donkey Cart Trail (with the option to hike part of the scenic but somewhat strenuous12 km trail) to the charming mission village of Heuningvlei. Overnight in a community guest cottage. Dinner and breakfast included.
Day 3: Heuningvlei Today you have a choice of two possible walks depending on your fitness levels and/or inclination! The Krakadouw Peak hike takes you to one of the highest peaks in the Cederberg Mountains. This is a quite strenuous 8 hour hike and mountain hiking experience is required. The 360 degrees panoramic view from the top are very much rewarding. Alternatively you can enjoy an easy day hike of 10-12km in the hills to the east of Heuningvlei. This area is rich in varied vegetation and offers more chances to admire ancient rock art. Near the end of the walk you can swim in a large, deep pool in the Heuningvlei River. Overnight in Heuningvlei guest cottage. Dinner and breakfast included.
Day 4: Cederberg Wilderness Area Today you enjoy a guided day hike of about 15km (6 to 8 hours). This takes you up to the Boontjieskloof Hut, in the heart of the Cederberg Wilderness Area, and then down to the little Brugkraal mission settlement, via Grasvlei village. There are plenty of opportunities en route to dip in natural pools of the perennial Grasvlei stream. The trail is not steep with a gentle climb up of 250 meter and then a 300 meter descent. Overnight in the community guest cottage in the hamlet of Brugkraal. Dinner and breakfast included.
Day 5: Wupperthal You continue on a guided trail down to the main settlement in the area, the Wupperthal Mission Village. The hike is approx 12 km long (taking 6 to 7 hours) down the valley of the Grasvlei River to Wupperthal along the Tra Tra River. The trail starts with a pretty solid path but at stages the hike takes you through sparse indigenous vegetation. Overnight in a guest cottage in Wupperthal. Dinner and breakfast included.
Day 6: Return to Clanwilliam After breakfast and some sightseeing you will be collected from Wupperthal at about 10 in the morning. En route you stop for a short guided tour of the Sevilla Rock Art Trail that consists of several well preserved rock art sites in a very attractive environment (about 2,5 hours).
